Custom and Hand Made Platinum Ruby and Old Cut Diamond Lariat Style Necklace

This extraordinary vintage necklace is crafted in platinum. The cable link chain measures 70cm (28") inches in length, secures with a spring ring and contains six, three per side, bezel-set Old European cut diamonds located just above the drop centerpiece. The lariat style centerpiece features a 1.57 carat cushion shaped glass filled ruby. A glass filled ruby means that heat and a substance is used to alter colour and fill the fractures that exist within the stone. This creates a more transparent, eye clean, brighter gem that resembles a more expensive ruby. Extending from the ruby, in a staggard length, are two bezel-set drops; one containing fifteen Old European cut diamonds and the other, twelve. Culminating from each end of these drops is a diamond cut diamond. Each of these diamonds weighs approximately .75 carats and combine for 1.50 carats. The drop portion of the piece measures 5cm (2") in length. The thirty-three Old European cut diamonds add another .55 carats bringing the total diamond weight to 2.05 carats. A red carpet worthy piece that can be shortened, if desired. An old European cut diamond is a round diamond primarily cut between 1890-1930. They were especially common during the Art Deco period. These antique diamonds were one of the predecessors to the modern round brilliant cut diamond. An old European–cut diamond has a round shape featuring 58 large facets and a small circle in the center (the open culet). Old European cut diamonds were cut for carat weight rather than brilliance. These antique diamonds have a special charm because diamond cutters had to rely on their eyes rather than modern technology to hand-cut them, making each stone unique. The old European cut favors dispersion or “fire,” the multi-colored flashes of light from within the stone and were cut and polished with candlelight in mind. The antique diamonds have a chunkier pattern of light, while today's modern diamonds have a more “splintery” pattern.
